The worst? Paying full price to see this fitfully amusing attempt at broad comedy that pits wise-guy burglar Martin Lawrence ("Big Momma's House") against corrupt billionaire Danny DeVito ("L.A. Confidential"). It's never a hardship to see the talented DeVito at work. He and various cast members, including John Leguizamo and a few "Saturday Night Live" mainstays, try hard. Blame the strident Lawrence, even toned down a bit from his usual mugging, and a shrill script for doing them in. There are cackles implicit in the adversarial relationship that springs up between the arrogant, mean-spirited rich guy and the too-clever-for-his-own-good thief after the former catches the latter in the act. When DeVito's character realizes that his mansion is being robbed, he surprises the miscreant, calls in the cops and actually steals the robber's own ring. The infuriated crook vows to regain the ring and exact revenge. But the antagonists are jerks, so there's no one to root for in their witless battle of wits. | |||
