With the Broadway-musical quality triumph of "Beauty & the Beast," co-directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale redefined the Disney feature-length cartoon as something far beyond mere kiddie fodder. Now, the Wise-Trousdale team has come up with the Disney animation unit's first great action movie, a fast-paced, witty affair about a multi-cultural band of adventurers who seek the fabled continent of Atlantis in the early 1900s. Young, awkward linguistics scholar Milo (voice of Michael J. Fox) believes in the existence of Atlantis and gets the chance to prove the legend is true when a rich benefactor finances a scientific expedition. The quest is dangerous, exciting and tremendously entertaining. Echoes of "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" actually benefit the film. Its phenomenal imagery and non-stop energy match the splendor and kinetics of the finest Japanese anime. And voices by James Garner, Cree Summer and Don Novello add to the fun.
