Colin Hanks (actor Tom's boy) and Jack Black (in manic buffoon mode) are unlikely brothers in a relatively hip, sometimes amusing teen-oriented comedy from director Jake Kasdan (writer/director Lawrence Kasdan's progeny). Hanks plays a bright, motivated high-school senior and would-be writer who wants to attend Stanford, has the grades and fails to get in due to a transcript error. He decides that he will not be denied. But his older sibling (Black) — a slob and loser — and his alcoholic mother (Catherine O'Hara from "SCTV" and "Beetlejuice") are no help, nor is his rich father (John Lithgow from TV's "Third Rock From the Sun"), who divorced mom for a young gold-digger, nor the high-school administrator (Lily Tomlin) who sent the wrong transcript to Stanford. The way the deck was stacked with comic talent, this should have been much, much funnier. And with Schuyler Fisk (Sissy Spacek's daughter) and Ben Stiller (Jerry Stiller's son) also in the cast, it's more like "Nepotism County." Still, it's OK.
