Ben Affleck is CIA agent Jack Ryan — at least, in this particular adaptation of a Tom Clancy novel. Affleck replaces the considerably older Harrison Ford, who starred as Ryan in "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger"; Ford took over for Alec Baldwin as the resourceful government operative after "The Hunt for Red October." So Affleck's presence as a younger, callow version of the character signals a re-boot of the film series based on Clancy's political thrillers. (It's getting like the parade of actors who have portrayed James Bond.) "The Sum of All Fears" adds up to a shrewdly made tension machine with a timely plot about terrorists using a stolen nuke to kindle a world war. Get this: Only novice CIA analyst Ryan can prevent a global holocaust. Some major plot points plant the film in an alternative universe, and Ryan's many audacious feats are a reach, but Affleck, Morgan Freeman as the CIA director and Liev Schreiber as a cunning U.S. agent give us steadfast heroes to cheer.
