This tremendously inventive, uproariously funny and ultimately touching animated film is a big surprise from Disney. Numerous Disney movies feature young heroes who have lost parents, but those kids are notoriously decent and well-behaved. Lilo, an adorable little Hawaiian girl, is another story. She's no angel; she may be the first Disney kid to act out in a destructive manner. Lilo is orphaned and living in near-squalor with her well-meaning older sister. A social worker is investigating the situation. Things look bleak until Stitch, a dangerous but silly-looking living weapon, arrives from outer space with interstellar bounty hunters on his tail. Disguising himself as a dog in an animal shelter, he's adopted by Lilo. Wacky mishaps are braved, and the two troublemakers learn the meaning of "family." Displaying a tropical palette and influences including Moebius, Gauguin and Dr. Seuss, "Lilo & Stitch" expertly blends 2-D animation with a hint of digital wizardry. And its heart is in the right place.
