Joined by an international cast whose very presence speaks integrity, Matt Dillon expands beyond acting to direct "City of Ghosts." It's a twisty, globetrotting thriller that Dillon actually co-wrote with Barry Gifford, author of the kooky, unbridled book/film "Wild at Heart." The shocker: "City of Ghosts," dripping with ethereal, narcotic atmosphere, is quite good. As his entree into moviemaking, it does Dillon proud. He also holds his own as the sullen-faced star of the film, which concerns con man Jimmy's odyssey from Manhattan to the exotic environs of Cambodia. Jimmy (Dillon) wants to track down his mentor Marvin when a deal they hatched goes bad. But Marvin, with a new scam on tap, isn't an easy man to find. Jimmy quickly learns that danger and betrayal are everywhere in the city of Phnom Penh. Populating "City of Ghosts," James Caan brings the right mix of bonhomie and corruption to the role of Marvin; Stellan Skarsgård is perfectly unsavory as Marvin's overseas henchman Kaspar; Natascha McElhone is lovely, idealistic backpacker Sophie; Gérard Depardieu is corpulent, weary bar/hotel manager Emile; and Kem Sereyvuth is virtuous cyclo driver Sok.
