If nothing else, "Catwoman," with hot Halle Berry as the title character and Sharon Stone as her nemesis, is the "Showgirls" of comic-book movies. Like "Showgirls," "Catwoman" is colorful, overheated, and harebrained; and it features two sexy co-stars in tight clothing, pitted against one another in a climactic catfight. Intentional camp? Maybe. For certain, "Catwoman," hyperbolically directed by the mono-named Pitof, is a crackpot corruption of DC Comics' feline-themed thief, adventuress and Batman love interest. It's amusingly bad in a way that may encourage friends to gather for giddy home viewing — spontaneous catcalls optional. But Bat-fans, beware. There's no sign of Selina Kyle under the cat mask. For no apparent reason, Selina, who bedeviled Batman through decades of comic books, is replaced by mousy artist Patience. Inadvertently, Patience learns that her employers at a cosmetics company, George Hedare (Lambert Wilson) and wife Laurel (Stone), are putting a toxic face cream on the market. The Hedares' hired hitmen terminate Patience, but she's reborn when a cat spirit enters her body. Empowered with cat-like speed and agility, she takes on the Hedares while pussyfooting around her love interest, detective Tom Lone (Benjamin Bratt). One hopes that talented Alex Borstein as the heroine's wacky gal pal and the esteemed Frances Conroy as a psychic cat expert were well paid. | |||
