In a once-serious genre reduced to outlandish gadgetry, quips and super-villains, the spy film "The Bourne Identity" was a cause for celebration. Its fusion of suspense, mystery and verisimilitude also set high standards for the sequel "The Bourne Supremacy," which reintroduces Jason Bourne, anti-hero of Robert Ludlum's espionage novels. Played once again with wounded, methodical ferocity by Matt Damon, Bourne is an ex-CIA assassin who suffered amnesia and is trying to reassemble the shards of his memory. He's neither a suave libertine like James Bond, nor a clownish parody like Austin Powers. Despite Bourne's boyish looks and athleticism, he has more in common with author John LeCarré's dislocated, disavowed secret agents. "Supremacy" picks up two years after "Identity." Bourne, still plagued by nightmares about his former career, is living quietly on a beach in India with his lover Marie (Franka Potente), until he's framed for a double murder in Berlin. A CIA operative (Joan Allen) and her superior (Brian Cox) mobilize the agency to find and subdue Bourne, but the hunted becomes the hunter. It isn't as tense a thrill ride as "Identity," which found intrigue and gravitas in Bourne's loss of self. Instead, "Supremacy" gets its urgency from Damon's cool personification of revenge and redemption — and from the often-frantic direction of Paul Greengrass.
