Tween girls may squeal with delight over "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement," a romantic comedy for their age group. The rest of the family, even those who tolerate this kind of movie for the benefit of the little ones, will be tested by it. That "The Princess Diaries" — director Garry Marshall's sappy, wholesome retake on his "My Fair Hooker" movie "Pretty Woman" — was successful enough to merit a sequel is disheartening. The first film was almost salvaged by three likable, capable performers: old pros Julie Andrews and Hector Elizondo as a classy European queen and her devoted head of security, and ingénue Anne Hathaway as the queen's granddaughter Mia, a klutzy San Francisco teenager who's stunned to learn she's next in line for the throne of a fictional principality. They and Marshall are back for an inferior Chapter Two. Mia, now a Genovian princess, must marry within 30 days or, by law, forfeit her right to be queen. Hathaway possesses heaps of presence and lovability, shining through the forced levity and draggy set pieces of a script that schleps when it should gambol. Andrews and Elizondo sparkle. John Rhys-Davies fumes as a cardboard villain plotting to have his aristocratic pretty-boy nephew (Chris Pine) crowned head of state instead of Mia. Can Mia find true love and ascend to power? The bigger question: Will someone please stop "PD3: Royal Wedding" from being made?
