By taking on the daring role of a pedophile in the potent, no-frills character study "The Woodsman," Kevin Bacon shows fearlessness and confidence in his acting skills; then, he rises to the challenge. Bacon's shaded, understated performance reinforces the film's resolute and, in ways, sympathetic view of its central figure, who seems to shift from protagonist to antagonist and back as the action unfolds. Walter (Bacon) is a convicted sex offender, released after 12 years in prison. He returns to his hometown to start a new life in a dingy flat that's right across the street from, of all things, an elementary school. Finding an employer willing to give him a second chance, Walter lands a job at a lumberyard. Fearful of his past being uncovered, he keeps to himself until Vickie, a feisty female co-worker, starts to break down his defenses. Played by Bacon's real wife Kyra Sedgwick, Vickie is a glimmer of hope for Walter, whose own brother-in-law (Benjamin Bratt) and sister no longer trust him. A suspicious cop (Mos Def) further complicates Walter's reformation and reentry into society. All the while, the chatter of children in the nearby schoolyard is a constant reminder of Walter's compulsion and the potential threat it poses. Director/co-writer Nicole Kassell does a deft job of juxtaposing her main themes: the pursuit of redemption and the constant vigilance, support and self-control required to overcome a predatory nature.
